In the East Bay, Ohlone people have always gathered, celebrated, and cared for the land—despite UC and the federal government declaring us “extinct” and stripping land rights a century ago.

Through mak-warép Ohlone Land Conservancy, we restore cultural fire, native planting, and traditional tending at CSU East Bay, UC Berkeley’s Russell Research Station, and Cafe Ohlone.

Now we’re preparing to take the next step: bringing land back to Ohlone stewardship and creating a cultural center where people can walk among hummingbird sage, artemisia, and California rose, sip native teas, and hear Chochenyo language spoken with pride – in a restored landscape surrounded by old-time East Bay beauty.

    Through our land conservancy, we have early-on established rich partnerships with CalFire, Contra Costa Fire, Contra Costa Resource Conservation District, East Bay Regional Parks and Diablo Fire Safe Council ensuring we have the necessary partners for safe, effective cultural burning.

    The mak-warép Ohlone Land Conservancy does not advocate for or promote a land tax, but instead we value and build mutually beneficial relationships and partnerships that work towards our goal to restore and reacquire land and mitigate wildfires with the changing climate.

    Additionally, in addition to our strong partnerships that stand with us as we actively stewarding large acreage of land in this moment, we also have a set goal of a specific, large tract of East Bay land that will work for the direct benefit of our East Bay Ohlone community through our Ohlone Land project.
